FAQ
Can I use a calculator or paper to do calculations?
Yes, but with some conditions. You may only use the calculator available on the exam platform; physical calculators are not allowed. You may have a blank sheet of paper during the exam.
Can someone be with me in the room during the exam?
Only applicants under 18 years of age may have a parent or guardian present in the room. However, they must remain within camera view at all times and may not assist the applicant taking the exam.
How long will my exam last?
Please allow 15 to 30 minutes for your exam, including scanning the room, verifying your device, and reviewing the instructions. Our well-prepared applicants typically finish in 7 to 14 minutes, plus the time they spend completing the electronic documents.
Do I need to install Zoom?
While installing the app isn’t mandatory, we recommend it. The app works much better than the web version. If you don’t want to install the app, the web version will suffice in most cases.
What happens if my internet connection drops?
Don’t worry! It could also happen to us. In that case, we will resume the session once the connection is restored and start a new test.
How long will it take to receive my license if I pass?
We will upload your exam, application, and forms to the ARRL at the end of the day of your exam. The ARRL then forwards them to the FCC for processing. Once the FCC has your documents, you will typically receive an email the following morning to pay the $35 application fee. You have 10 days to pay, but we recommend doing so as soon as you receive the email. If you pay before 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time), you will receive an email from the FCC the next morning with your call sign and a link to download a copy of your license.
What happens if I fail the exam? Can I retake it?
You can retake the exam immediately, paying another fee, of course.
Can I take the Technical and General exams at the same time?
Yes, in fact, you can take all three levels in a single session if you’re prepared. Several candidates have done it! The exam fee covers the next level test if you decide to advance in the same session.
How much does the exam cost?
The exam costs $15 for adults and $5 for those under 18.
What payment methods are accepted?
The available payment methods can be found on the payment page at the time you select your exam date and time. All payment options will be clearly displayed before you complete your registration.
